摘要 864,169. Emergency pneumatic tyres. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. Oct. 13, 1959 [Dec. 18, 1958], No. 34696/59. Class 144 (2). An emergency pneumatic tyre for application to a deflated vehicle wheel tyre 3 comprises an endless flexible inflatable tube 10 having closely-spaced interior and exterior walls 12, 11 which in transverse section are flat and of a width greater than the tread 4 of the tyre 3, the tube 10 having a radially inwardly-directed positioning shoulder 21 at one side edge to locate against the outboard shoulder of the wheel tyre 3 and said positioning shoulder having a circumferentially inextensible narrow bead 22 of textile cords incorporated therein whereby the tube is caused to expand radially inwardly on inflation to collapse the wheel tyre tread 4 between the side-walls 5, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. As shown, the tube is constructed from a pair of cross-laid circumferential parallel-cord plies 13, 14 having a cord angle of 20 to 30 degrees, the ply ends overlapping for the full width of the tread portion 26 of the tube. The inboard ply end 16 terminates short of the inboard edge of the tube, whereas the ply end 15 extends into the radially inwardly moulded outboard edge 21 of the tube which forms the positioning shoulder. The tube edges are reinforced by pre-vulcanized rubber strips 19, 20 positioned within an internal rubber liner 17 as shown, or between the liner 17 and the innermost ply 14. The bead 22 is attached to the tube by means of a flipper strip 24 and a rubber filler strip 25. To ensure equiangular spacing of the undulations produced in the collapsed wheel tyre tread, the interior wall 12 of the tube is reinforced against stretch at circumferentially equi-spaced points by additional cross-laid strips 29 of parallel cords having a cord angle of 30 to 45 degrees, the tube being moulded with the interior wall portions extending between the reinforced areas being bulged radially inwardly. The tube may have an outer rubber covering 28. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 8, the positioning shoulder is formed by a textile cord bead 32 attached by a web, formed by a rubbercovered cord fabric flipper strip 34, to the extreme outboard edge of the tube, the web having an aperture 37 for access to the tube inflation valve 36. Inflation of the tube may be effected by a cartridge of carbon dioxide or other gas under pressure. The provision of the inextensible bead 22 at the outboard edge of the tube facilitates the outboard side bulging of the collapsed vehicle wheel tyre, as shown in Fig. 2, where clearance is restricted on the inboard side of the vehicle wheel. To ensure such outboard bulging, a tie strap is provided to extend diametrically of the wheel and having a hook at each end to engage in notches 41 in the shoulder 21, or alternatively in apertures in the web 34, 35 of the Fig. 8 construction. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 831,767.
