PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To instantly start working without waiting for a rise in rotational speed of a main spindle when switching and working two main spindles. SOLUTION: This lathe is provided with two main spindles 5A and 5B and a common tool rest 6 to be selectively switched and used for both of the spindles 5A and 5B. The lathe is provided with a working preparatory control means 43 for attaching and detaching a work W and starting rotation of the right main spindle 5B for the right main spindle 5B during working by the left main spindle 5A. A main spindle tip rotation starting means 44 constituting the means 43 starts rotation of the right main spindle 5B by a prescribed command 61 in a working program 31 of the left main spindle 5A. The working preparatory control means 43 has a means 45 for fixing rotation starting time for the right main spindle 5B so that termination time of working by the left main spindle 5A and time when the right main spindle 5B reaches set rotational speed may be substantially matched. The working preparatory control means 43 performs the same control as the above also when switching working from the right main spindle 5B to the left main spindle 5A.
