PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify program control of a carrying system when switching a guide member by electric control by switching a carrying passage of paper by the guide member when reversing the carrying direction of a document in a conventional paper carrying device. SOLUTION: This paper carrying device is provided with a document supply tray 9, a second carrying passage R2 for carrying the paper to a document discharge tray 7c from the document supply tray 9 while being reversed, a reciprocally rotatable extension roller 26 arranged in the tail end part of the second carrying passage R2, a return passage R4 for carrying the paper to a reading part 10 from the tail end part of the second carrying passage R2 and a second guide member 38 arranged in a branch part of the return passage R4 and the second carrying passage R2, and the second guide member 38 can transfer the paper carried in the second guide member 38 to the return passage R4.
