The electric toothbrush has an electric motor for driving a brush head, an accumulator and a mains charger. The housing can be coupled to or decoupled from the charger to use the toothbrush. The coupling state is detected by a sensor. The toothbrush has a timer function for a recommended brushing period and a signal function driven by the timer function for outputting a user-detectable signal activated by charger coupling and/or decoupling.
