A process for the preparation of a hardenable epoxy resin comprises reacting a :b -bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) ethane and epichlorhydrin in the presence of an alkali and separating the resultant product. The resins may be hardened by reaction with cross-linking agents optionally in the presence of catalysts, specified cross-linking agents being carboxylic acid anhydrides, organic polyamines, polyamides, polyesters, isocyanates and phenols, catalysts specified being amines, amides, boron trifluoride and triethylene tetramine. In the example, epichlorhydrin is reacted with a :b -bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) ethane in the presence of sodium hydroxide.
