PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a treatment material capable of simply and efficiently removing harmful heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, or the like, from water in which harmful heavy metals are dissolved, and a water treatment method using the same. SOLUTION: The treatment material comprising gel-like matter obtained by solidifying an iron (III) hydroxide precipitate in a gel-like state is brought into contact with water containing heavy metals. This gel-like matter is obtained by solidifying an aqueous solution, which is prepared by adding sodium alginate to a solution containing the iron (III) hydroxide precipitate, by using a calcium salt solution. Further, the gel like matter to be used is obtained by adding polyvinyl alcohol together with sodium alginate to the solution containing the iron (III) hydroxide precipitate and solidifying this solution with the calcium salt solution and subsequently treating the solidified solution with a glutaraldehyde solution to glutarize the polyvinyl alcohol.
