The invention relates to a method for shutting down a reactor used to oligomerize alkenes on a heterogeneous catalyst containing nickel. According to the inventive method, the amount of alkenes in the feed stream to the reactor is decreased by using a hydrocarbon flow which is substantially devoid of aromatic compounds. The amount of alkenes in the feed stream to the reactor is reduced to less than 10 % wt. % of the total feed stream so that the temperature of the catalyst does not exceed or does not substantially exceed the maximum temperature of the catalyst in a productive operational mode before the shut down occurs. The hydrocarbon flow which is substantially devoid of aromatic compounds and which is used partially or fully is the flow which is retained when the oligomer products are separated from the reactor discharge. |
