PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a nonionic surfactant having a capacity of surface activity comparative to an alkylphenol-based nonionic surfactant and free from the danger of an environmental hormone. SOLUTION: The method for producing an aliphatic alcohol alkylene oxide adduct comprises adding an alkylene oxide to an aliphatic alcohol in the presence of an acid having an acid strength H0 in terms of Hammet acidity function of -30.3 to -11.0 and/or its metallic salt, or in the presence of a strong acid salt of a metal having the lowest vacant orbit determined by Schroedinger equation of -10 to -3.
