PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biaxially stretched polyester film for a magnetic recording medium having excellent coating suitability, high speed windability and high speed cuttability. SOLUTION: The biaxially stretched polyester film comprises at least two layers in such a manner that at least one layer (A) has a protrusion density of a height of 0.4μm or more of 10 to 200 pieces/mm2, a protrusion density of a height of 0.2μm or more of 300 to 1,000 pieces/mm2, a protrusion density of a height of 0.01 to 0.10μm of 12,000 to 30,000 pieces/mm2, and a thickness unevenness of a width direction of 100 nm/m or less.
