PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer printer and a method of controlling energization therefor wherein an end of an ink ribbon is detected during the printing and a thermal head is preheated after a ribbon cassette is replaced, thereby preventing lowering of the printing quality when the printing is restarted. SOLUTION: This printer comprises a memory means that stores a heating temperature of the thermal head 9 at a time when a detection sensor 6c detects the end of the ink ribbon 11 while the printing is performed by transferring ink on the ink ribbon 11 by the thermal head 9. The printer further comprises a control means that can preheat the thermal head 9 to the heating temperature stored in the memory means when the detection sensor 6c detects the end of the ink ribbon 11 during the printing and the ribbon cassette 10 is replaced. Consequently, after the ribbon cassette 10 is replaced, it is possible to preheat the thermal head 9 of which the temperature is lowered so that it is possible to print an image with high quality having no variation in the printed density.
