PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coater and a coating method in which the controllability of the coating rate of a coating solution is improved and the fluctuation is reduced. SOLUTION: In the roller coater provided with a pair of squeeze rollers 2-1 and 2-2 for applying a coating solution provided with a traveling metallic strip in between and lined with rubber, the draft of the one squeeze roller 2-1 is adjustable through a roller chock 4 supporting the squeeze roller, a low- friction member 7a is provided to the sliding part 7 of the chock 4, the other roller 2-2 is fixed, and a load cell 6 for measuring the draft is furnished to the chock 4 supporting the roller 2-2. When the coating solution is applied by the coater, the draft of the roller is controlled so that the coating weight of the dried solution is kept constant in accordance with the width, thickness and traveling speed of the strip and the coating solution concentration or further with the shape of the groove on the roller surface.
