PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pillow which is variable in height and is automatically changed in its height in correspondence to the height when a user lies on his or her back and when the user lies down on his or her side. SOLUTION: This pillow has an identifying means 2 which identifies the direction of the user's body in a use state and has a height adjusting means which changes the height automatically according to the direction of the body identified by the identifying means. The identifying means has a sensor capable of detecting the difference in the width or area of the segment where the user comes into contact with the top surface of a bed so that the direction of the body is identified in accordance with the detection. The sensor is composed of switch groups which are arrayed in the transverse width direction of the pillow in the front surface part of the bed and are changed over by pressurization. The height adjusting means has a lifting mechanism 11 of an upper structure 18 coupled vertically displaceably to a lower structure 19, a drive section 12 for lifting the upper structure body by driving the lifting mechanism, a height position detecting section 13 for detecting the height position of the upper structure body, and a control section 15 for controlling the upper structure body so as to reach the height position corresponding to the result of the identification by activating the drive section in accordance with the detected height position and the result of the identification by the identifying means 2.
