PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an initializing method and a rewriting method, by which a favorable recorded image having no afterimage (which emerges as ununiform coloring) is obtained at the rewriting of the image of a reversible heat sensitive recording medium and its device. SOLUTION: This initializing method is that of the reversible heat sensitive recording medium, which develops color or decolorizes due to the change of a heating temperature or of a cooling speed after heating. In this method, an operation for uniformalizing a recording layer by heating the whole surface or the recording region of the reversible heat sensitive recording medium with a thermal head up to its coloring temperature for developing color in the medium is executed.
