PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an index device and a method of indexing angle of a rotator capable of obtaining higher accuracy of angle indexing while sufficiently securing strength with a simple structure and being additionally and easily mounted to a conventional machine tool. SOLUTION: The method for holding a work piece W at any index angle comprises the steps of dividing the any index angle by a division angleθto obtain a quotient n and a remainder angle m, rotating the index 10 by the remainder angle m from a reference condition in which the position of the division angleθcorresponds to a main holding member 40, obtaining a first condition in which sub-holding member 50 is locked to a sub-part to be engaged 31 formed at a position of the remainder angle m, then rotating the index 10 by the remainder angle m and also by n times of the division angleθ(nθ), and obtaining a second condition in which the main holding member 40 is locked to a main part to be engaged 21 formed at a position of the division angleθ.
