PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for horizontal position multi layer automatic welding capable of forming penetration bead stably in site welding where many groove gap errors and surface differences occur, and improving greatly quality and efficiency. SOLUTION: The horizontal position multi layer automatic welding which connects thick plates 1, 2 by single bevel groove welding in site welding, is characterized in that packing material 5 for welding which is previously fitted in the groove of backing plates 3, 4 with grooves, is arranged at the backside of the single bevel groove welding of thick plates 1, 2.
