A method of purifying phenols obtained by acid catalysed cleavage of alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon hydroperoxides comprises subjecting the phenol to treatment with an inorganic or strong organic acid in the proportion of 0.05% to 1% by weight of the phenol. The hydroperoxide cleavage product may first be distilled to remove the lower and/or higher boiling components, treated with the acid, preferably concentrated sulphuric acid, neutralised with an alkaline substance, and finally distilled to give a phenol containing reduced amounts of impurities such as mesityl oxide. Examples relate to the purification of phenol itself. Cresols, naphthols and dihydroxybenzenes may be similarly treated.
|
