PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glow plug control device and a suitable glow plug to fit it which makes it possible to control the engine by detecting the ion generated by engine combustion in order to reduce the vibration and noises of the engine and clean the exhaust gas by keeping the glow plug at the specified or higher temperature during the later stage of a preglow period and an engine warming up period and also after the period passing them. SOLUTION: The glow plug 10 fixed to the engine 30 is equipped with two ceramic matrixes 2 that has an exposed part 2d in the combustion chamber 32 of a heater 4 and engine 30a. And in a glow plug control device 100, ECU 105 controls the conduction of electric current of glow plug 10 to the heater 4 and raise the surface temperature Ts of the exposed part 2d to 500 deg.C or higher. It also measures the ionic electric current Ii using glow plug 10. Switches 102, 103 switch the transmission to the glow plug or the detection of the ionic current through the indicated signal of ECU 105.
