PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical film with excellent optical characteristics, with out using a solvent and with high productivity and a polarizing plate with excellent polarizing characteristics using the same. SOLUTION: In the optical film of which the birefringence value and the relaxation stress of the film obtained by melt molding of a transparent synthetic resin are expressed byΔn andσrespectively, an inequalityΔn/σ<=|4.0×10-9|m2/N holds for the constantΔn/σand the retardation value of the film is <=20 nm.
