PURPOSE: Provided is an apparatus for exactly measuring absolute steering angle of wheels under driving state in the electric power steering system. CONSTITUTION: The electric power steering system is provided with a steering shaft (2) of which one end is connected to a hand wheel (3) and the other end is connected to at least a load wheel and an electric motor (6) is connected to a steering shaft via a gear box having a reduction gar ratio except for integer. Two sensors (9, 10) where one sensor detects the angular position of a motor rotor and the other sensor senses the angular position of the steering shaft are provided. The presence of the gear ratio except for the integer generates the beat frequency between the outputs of the two sensors so as to measure the angular position of the steering shaft extending over a range larger than the complete one rotation. The two sensors (9, 10) are provided with either of an absolute position sensor or an index type sensor.
