PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an index generating system and index generating method capable of generating an index using a comparison method according to a purpose of using data. SOLUTION: A storage device is provided with a data storing part for actually storing data input by a data input device for inputting data, an index storing part for storing an index for retrieving the data stored in the data storing part, and a comparison method storing part for storing a comparison method according to the classification of data. The data processor is provided with a comparison method obtaining means for taking the comparison method from the comparison method storing part, a data storing means for storing the data from the data input device in the data storing part and delivering the data to an index generating means, and an index generating means for obtaining the comparison method corresponding to the structure of the data delivered from the data storing means from the comparison method obtaining means.
