PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document retrieving method allowing the improvement in retrieval precision and a higher speed retrieval. SOLUTION: An index 2 retains the information of the partial character line of a registered document divided by a text dividing means 1. When a retrieving character line is imparted, the retrieving character line is divided into partial character lines by the text dividing means 1, a score-calculated document selecting means 3 selects the document whose score is to be calculated by use of the divided partial character line. A score calculating means 4 calculates the score every selected document by use of the divided partial character line and generates a retrieval result. The score-calculated document selecting means 3 specifies a document containing all the partial character lines of the retrieving character line to form a score-calculated document. The score calculating means 4 calculates the score of the score-calculated character line from the score of the partial character lines in the score calculated document every score- calculated document.
