A piston or turbine type small water flow detector (1) is located on the building side of the supplier's water meter (2) and signals an electronic circuit such as a microcontroller (7) situated nearby. The microcontroller has a transmitter/receiver which after a built in time delay causes an audio/visual alarm (4) inside the building to operate and may if required automatically operate an additional electrovalve.
