PURPOSE: To surely prevent the inside surface (oriented film) of a substrate from being damaged even if the grain of a spacer is one kind, in the alignment of two substrates disposed to face oppositely, by performing alignment with a recess formed at least on one of the oppositely facing surfaces of the two substrates. CONSTITUTION: A TFT substrate 151 is attached to a stage 10A on the TFT substrate side and sucked by vacuum; similarly, a TFT substrate 152 is attached to a stage 10B on the oppositely facing substrate side and sucked by vacuum; and the two substrates are disposed to face each other oppositely. As a result, each TFT substrate 151, 152 is sucked to the stage side and recessed, thereby forming a space 20 on the oppositely facing side of the TFT substrates, with the center part of each substrate 151, 152 separated away from each other. Even if an alignment operation is performed in this state, a spacer 161 merely moves with the TFT substrate 151, coming in no contact with the opposite substrate 152; hence, there is no possibility that the oriented film is damaged.
