857,110. Coating webs. DORNBUSCH, P. [trading as DORNBUSCH & CO.]. July 29, 1958 [Feb. 10, 1958], No. 24320/58. Class 140. [Also in Group XIII] An apparatus for the continuous application of patterned coatings of synthetic material pastes 7, i.e. synthetic thermoplastic or thermosetting materials, on a continuous web 1, e.g. of paper, textile or metal foil, comprises a double-walled blade 9 forming the gapped inclined lower surface of a hollow-walled container 10 for the paste, the blade 9 being mounted adjustably relative to an impression roll 6 and a counter-roll 3, and means for feeding the web 1 between the rolls 3, 6, the hollow walls of the container 10, the blade 9, and the rolls 3, 6 being adapted to receive a temperature-regulating medium. The side of the container 10 facing the roll 6 is a double-walled, vertically-adjustable beam 12 which is adapted to receive a heating or cooling medium. The paste 7 may be polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene, polyvinyl acetate or condensation products of phenol resins and the temperature of the medium supplied to the blade 9 and beam 12 is such as to maintain the paste in uncoagulated condition in the container, whilst the temperature of the roll 6 is arranged, by passing heating or cooling medium through the roll 6, which is hollow, to initiate coagulation of the paste 7. The roll 3 has a jacket 5 consisting of alternate layers of asbestos and aluminium foil, and the pattern on the roll 6 may be net-like. A stirrer 13 and a slide 14 are linked together about a pivot 17 so that raising of the stirrer 13 lowers the slide 14 and vice versa. In a modification, the stirrer 13 is a hollow wedge through which a heating or cooling medium is conducted, and a pump circulates paste between a reservoir and the container 10 which has an overflow leading to the reservoir. The storing and spreading mechanism may be pivotable as a unit to shift the point of application of paste to the roll 6 towards or away from the point B. The blade 9 may abut the roll 6, in which case an openwork pattern of paste is provided on the web 1, or be spaced therefrom.
