The metal halide lamp has a ceramic discharge vessel (4). A capillary tube (11) consists of two sections, which are located axially one behind the other. The diameter of the bore of the inner section comes to, at most, 92% of the diameter of the bore in the outer section. A lead-in conductor (9) consists of two parts lying axially one behind the other which are assigned to the two sections. The length of the capillary tube corresponds at least to the length of the electrode spacing. The diameter of the bore of the inner section comes to at least 80% of the diameter of the bore in the outer section.
