PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To conduct a variable-speed operation over a wide range from a low to high revolution with a small and high-output machine. SOLUTION: In a permanent-magnet reluctance rotary electric machine comprising a stator 1 having an armature winding 3 housed in a slot 7 and a rotor 10 positioned inside the stator 1 wherein a plurality of magnetic barriers is formed by a cavity 5 so that a part where a flux is easy to pass (d axis) and a part where a flux is difficult to pass (q axis) are alternately formed and wherein a permanent magnet 6 is disposed in the cavity 5, the rotor 10 is so configured as to satisfy the relation of; PL/2πRWqave>=130 when the average thickness of a rotor iron core 4 of the outside of the rotor-radius direction of the cavity 5 disposed in the q-axial direction is set as Wqave[m], the width of the peripheral direction of the cavity 5 as L[m], the number of poles as P and the radius of the rotor 10 as R[m].
