PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external character registration system preventing duplicated registration by allowing automatic determination whether a character form of a character demanded as an external character is already registered in a dictionary or requires new registration. SOLUTION: This registration system includes at least a stroke specifying means 20 specifying respective strokes constituting an outline of an inputted external character, an analyzing means 21 analyzing a relationship of relative positions between the strokes specified by the stroke specifying means 20, a dictionary data base 32 having data showing the relative position between the respective strokes in respective characters registered in the dictionary, and a retrieving means 22 comparing a relationship of the relative positions between the analysis result analyzed in the analyzing means 21 with the strokes of the characters stored in the dictionary database 32 and retrieving whether the same character as the inputted external character exists in the dictionary data base 32 or not.
