PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent liquid crystal display device with higher luminance in which the maximum contrast can be obtained in the direction inclined from the normal line over the periphery of the display face. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display device 1, a visibility angle enlarging film 10 and a polarizing plate 11 are successively laminated on a glass substrate 4 of a liquid crystal cell 2, while a polarizing plate 12 and a back light 13 are disposed on a glass substrate 3. A phase compensation plate is disposed between the glass substrate 4 and the polarizing plate 11. The distance D of the liquid crystal material in the inclined direction corresponding to the visibility angle direction is specified to d/cosθso as to control the visibility angleθto20 deg. to70 deg. where the maximum contrast can be obtained in the whole azimuth direction from the normal line of the display side of the liquid crystal cell 2, and the compensation performance in the inclined direction by the phase compensation plate is controlled to be higher than the compensation performance in the normal line direction.
