Aqueous antiplaque composition containing bactericide such as triclosan, also contains polyoxyalkylene copolymer grafted with acid, ester and phosphorus-containing monomers to improve antiplaque effect

In a buccal-dental composition having antiplaque activity comprising an aqueous vehicle, a bactericidal antiplaque agent and a water-soluble copolymer, the copolymer consists of: (i) a backbone formed from 2-4C oxyalkylene units and having a degree of polymerization of 5-300; and (ii) hydrophilic polymeric graft(s) obtained by polymerization of a mixture of a water-soluble monomers. A buccal-dental composition having improved antiplaque activity comprises: (a) an aqueous vehicle; (b) at least one bactericidal antiplaque agent; and (c) at least one water-soluble copolymer consisting of; (i) an oligomeric or polymeric backbone formed from 2-4C (preferably 2-3C) linear or branched oxyalkylene units and having a degree of polymerization of 5-300 (preferably 8-250); and (ii) one or more hydrophilic polymeric grafts obtained by polymerization of a mixture of a water-soluble monomers comprising: (A) 10-90 (preferably 50-80) wt. % acid monomer(s) selected from alpha , beta -ethylenically unsaturated mono- or polycarboxylic or mono- or polysulfonic acids or their salts; (B) 10-70 (preferably 10-50) wt. % ester(s) of alpha , beta -ethylenically unsaturated mono- or polycarboxylic acids; and (C) 0.1-50 (preferably 1-10) wt. % alpha , beta -ethylenically unsaturated phosphonated or phosphated monomer(s). The weight ratio of backbone (i) to graft(s) (ii) is 10:90 to 80:20 (preferably 20:80 to 60:40); and the average molecular weight of the copolymer (ii) is 50000-2000000 (preferably 100000-200000). Independent claims are included for the use of copolymer(s) (c) for improving the antiplaque activity of such composition; and a corresponding activity improving method involving addition of (c).
