Determining a charge state of a particle filter (14) arranged in the exhaust gas tract (12) of an IC engine (10), especially a diesel engine, comprises acquiring the sulfur content of the exhaust gas; and determining the charge state of the particle filter depending on the sulfur content of the exhaust gas or a parameter derived from the sulfur content.
