Method involves connecting a chopper drum (4) in rotationally fixed manner to output shaft (32) of rotary transmitter (31) and fixed in relation to a counter blade (7). The rotary transmitter transmits the rotation angle to an evaluation unit (40). Position of each chopping blade (3) edge (5), which is directly opposite the counter blade is assigned to each rotation angle in the evaluation unit. The evaluation unit is electrically connected to a blade clearance monitor and both motor operators (16,16') of an adjustment mechanism. An independent claim is included for a method for using the device.
