The engine has an injection system (1) with at least one distributing injection pump (2) that feeds fuel to at least one injection valve (4) per cylinder and that has at least one electromagnetic or piezo mechanical actuator (6,6a) for altering the supply quantity and/or start time. The opening and closing times of the injection valve can be controlled independently of the fuel pressure generated by the distributing injection pump.
