A lightweight flexible heating mat (100) for melting snow and ice that can be cut to custom lengths or to accommodate direction changes or to avoid obstructions. The heating mat (100) includes a plurality of planar flexible heaters (10) sandwiched between two vulcanized polymer protective sheets (12, 14). The heating mat (100) can be activated remotely or manually and can be powered from either one of its ends and provided with nonskid patterns (5) for use in driveways and walkways.
