A fire-resistant lubricant comprises an aqueous dispersion of molybdenum disulphide which contains dissolved therein a water-soluble agent for increasing the viscosity of the lubricant. The water-soluble viscosity-increasing agent may be sorbitol, polyvinylpyrrolidone (i.e. N-vinyl collidone polymer), polyalkylene glycol (e.g. polypropylene glycol), a polymerization product of acrylic acid, polyvinyl alcohol or methyl cellulose. The lubricant may contain a corrosion inhibitor, for example one comprising an aqueous alkaline solution of hydrazine hydrate with or without an emulsifiable mineral oil. In an example, a lubricant consists of molybdenum disulphide, sorbitol, an aqueous alkaline hydrazine hydrate solution (wherein the alkalinity is provided by trisodium phosphate and caustic soda) and emulsifiable mineral oil (e.g. cutting oil). |
