<p>In an anti-backlash gear comprising two engaging gear wheels 60, 70 with a spring bias 81 for relatively rotating the gear wheels about a common centre 54, the circular width (T70, Fig 8A) of the teeth 76 of one gear wheel 70 is greater than the circular width (T60) of the teeth 66 of the other gear wheel 60 to cause loading in excess of the spring bias 81 to be shifted to the one gear wheel 70 so as to reduce reverse bending loads. The spring bias 81 provides a maximum torque of at least 100 foot-pounds so as to reduce noise. The two gear wheels 60, 70 may be adjustably rotated relative to each other by a threaded stem 90 coupled to the one gear wheel 70 and having a head 94 bearing against the other gear wheel 60 in opposition to the spring bias 81. Alternatively, the two gear wheels may have respective inclined splines (561,571, Fig 10) which engage each other about a common rotational axis for rotating the two gear wheels relative to each other. The gear is assembled in a gear train by establishing a first mesh (48, Fig 1) between it and a gear (42) and then adjusting the position of a third gear (100) relative to it by an adjusting mechanism (120) to form a second mesh (96).</p> |
