PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet material carrying device capable of inexpensively forming a high grade image by detecting the thickness of a sheet material with simple constitution and an image forming device having this sheet material carrying device. SOLUTION: A rotary encoder 17 is arranged on a rotary shaft 14 of a feed arm 15 for rotatably supporting a feed roller 13, and the thickness of the sheet material P is detected by detecting a moving distance of the feed roller 13 moved by strength of stiffness of the sheet material P fed by the feed roller 13 by the rotary encoder 17.
