PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a detergent composition which gives little irritation to the skin or hair and shows an excellent foaming property, detergency and long- term shelf stability. SOLUTION: This detergent composition contains one or more surfactants selected from the group consisting of an anionic surfactant, an amphoteric surfactant and a nonionic surfactant other than a sucrose fatty acid ester, and a long-chain aliphatic carboxylic lactic ester having a purity of >=80 mol %.
