A projection type display device comprises a multiple light source arrangement, an integrator operative to make illumination rays from the multiple light source arrangement uniform in luminance intensity distribution in a plane perpendicular to the optical axis, a light bulb for modulating the illumination rays from the integrator according to image information and a projection lens for projecting an image. The integrator includes at least two integrator optical plates disposed with an axial separation in the optical axis and a deflection optical element which consists of Fresnel-shaped parallel surfaces at opposite sides divided into a same number of surface sections as a number of said light source assemblies to reduce bundles of rays in size and translate the bundles of rays toward the optical axis.
