PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas barrier film which utilizes natural resources effectively and has excellent gas barrier properties, of which the deterioration due to moisture and the dependence on temperature are reduced and which is excellent also in suitability for processing and storage. SOLUTION: The gas barrier material is prepared by forming a film containing a water-soluble polysaccharide having a residual group of a uronic acid, at least on one side of a base. The water-soluble polysaccharide containing the residual group of the uronic acid in the film may also be constituted of the residual group of a uronic acid such as a polyuronic acid or a mucopolysaccharide constituted of one kind or more uronic acids alone, and of the residual group of other sugar.
