PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an embroidery sewing machine capable of controlling the sewing speed on the basis of the type of fabric, the type of an embroidery frame 21, or the location of the embroidery frame 21. SOLUTION: The upper speed limit of the vertical movements of a needle 71 is set according to the type of fabric such as its weight, the size and weight of the embroidery frame 21, or the extended location of the embroidery frame 21 in the Y-direction. The needle 71 is operated with its speed lowered as the fabric and embroidery frame 21 are heavier and the embroidery frame 21 is more extended in the Y-direction. By this, stable embroidery sewing is obtained.
