A method for producing a transgenic plant having modified cellulosic fibers or fiber cells. The method involves expressing a recombinant nucleic acid that encodes a cell wall modulation protein or polypeptide translationally fused to a secretion signal protein in a transgenic plant wherein the modified fibers or fiber cells are longer or shorter than, or have different absorbancy, strength or rheology, when compared with fibers or fiber cells of an identically cultivated progenitor plant which does not contain the recombinant nucleic acid.
