PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rationalize clamping-pressing force for a belt type continuously variable transmission when an interruter is switched from an interrupted condition to a connected condition in N→D shift or N→R shift, so as to reduce an energy loss by friction while preventing slippage. SOLUTION: An estimated turbine torque TT is brought into an estimated input torque TIN when a clutch or a brake engaged in forward travel or rearward travel is completely engaged (R4-R6), and transmission torque TD is found from a transmission torque map predetermined taking inertia shch as an engine and engagement torque into account and the torque TD is used as the estimated input torque TIN (R2-R3) to control the belt clamping-pressing force, in an engagement transition period just after the N→D shift or the N→R shift.
