PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the shaft length of a continuously variable transmission to be driven through a belt during advancing but not through the belt during reversing. SOLUTION: The continuously variable transmission comprises an input shaft 3 connected to an engine output shaft 1 through a starting mechanism 2; a driven shaft 10 which has a drive pulley 11 and to which a power is transmitted from the input shaft; a driven shaft 20 having a driven pulley 21 a belt 15 run around and between the two pulleys; and an output shaft 32 to transmit the power of the driven shaft 20 to a wheel. The diameters of the pulleys are changed in a reverse direction by actuators 14 and 22 situated at the two pulleys. A power shaft 4 is situated non-axially with and in parallel to the drive shaft 10 and the driven shaft 20. The power shaft 4 and the driven shaft 10 are interconnected through a direct coupling transmission mechanism 13 for advancing and the input shaft 3 and the driven shaft 20 are interconnected through a direct coupling mechanism 26 for reversing. The input shaft 3 is situated non-axially with and in parallel to the drive shaft 10 and the driven shaft 20. A power during advancing is transmitted through the direct coupling transmission mechanism 13 for advancing and the belt 15 and a power during reversing is transmitted through the direct coupling transmission mechanism 26 for reversing.
