PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a tumble generating valve from being fixed without impairing engine startability. SOLUTION: The intake passage of an engine is branched into two passages on the downstream side of a throttle valve, and the tumble generating valve capable of being opened or closed by the signals of an electronic control device is arranged in a main passage. The tumble generating valve is temporarily fully closed (step S6) at an engine stop, then it is slightly opened (step 7) and held at this opened state until the next engine start. A slight gap is generated between the tumble generating valve and the wall of the main passage during the engine stop, thus preventing the tumble generating valve from being fixed or frozen by stains.
