A method of determining the location of a fault in a communication network. The network 1 includes a remote computer 6 and associated modem 5, a user computer 2 and associated modem 3, and a telecommunications line 4. The method characterised by the steps of: a) the user computer 2 contacting the remote computer 6 via the respective modems 3, 5 and the telecommunications line 4, and b) the remote computer 6 obtaining at least one measurement at the remote end, and c) the remote computer 6 recording performance data relating to the performance of the communication network 1 based on the measurement or measurements.
