An animal ear tag including a coupling (12, 14, 21) for installing the ear tag with an animal's ear. The coupling has a stem (12) with a head portion (14) and a female opening (21) through which the head portion (14) can pass to effect a coupling action. The female opening (21) is formed as part of a separate enclosed boss component (17) of hard material. The boss component (17) is fastened to material forming a tag part (11) of the ear tag.
