PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect the position of a moving object. SOLUTION: Tan-1 is calculated from A/D conversion values of an A-phase and a B-phase to calculate a fine position and, by the soft addition with a counter for a rough position, detection of markedly high resolving power can be performed. The changeover of the edges of pulse signals of the A-phase and the B-phase is not set to the zero cross point of a since wave signal but set to a place where shift of arbitrary quantity is given to provide hysteresis characteristics and, if the quantity thereof is preliminarily designated, the counter for the rough position can be certainly corrected on the basis of the value of the fine position, a rotary direction or the like and a position can be detected with extremely high accuracy as compared with a conventional example.
