PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of suppressing dispersion of torque in producing rich and lean conditions for each cylinder group. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine comprises the cylinder groups 1a, 1b divided into multiple numbers, branched exhaust pipes 8a, 8b where these cylinder groups 1a, 1b are respectively connected, starting catalyst 9a, 9Bb placed in the branched exhaust pipes 8a, 8b, NOx absorbing reduction catalyst 12 provided on a downstream of a junction part of the branched exhaust pipes, and an exhaust gas adjusting means for exhausting exhaust gas with an air-fuel ratio of rich and lean from each of the cylinder groups 1a, 1b. The exhaust gas adjusting means adjusts the exhaust gas by changing opening/closing timing of intake and exhaust valves 28, 29 driven by a solenoid driving valve systems 30, 31 provided at least to the cylinder. |
