PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device having a function for supporting focus control. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a VF-Y preparing circuit 1 for preparing ka luminance signal for view finder from an image pickup signal, a DTL preparing circuit 2 for VF-Y for extracting the high frequency component of the luminance signal, a gate circuit 6 for extracting the image pickup signal and any arbitrary area from the output of a gate signal generating circuit 5, a high frequency component detecting circuit 7 for detecting the high frequency component of the output, an absolute value circuit 8 for providing the absolute value of that output, a maximum value detecting circuit 9 for detecting the maximum value of outputs from the absolute value circuit 8 in a prescribed cycle, a data holding circuit 10 for holding the maximum value upto the next detection and a gain control circuit 3 for controlling the gain of a DTL signal corresponding to the output signals of the data holding circuit 10 and a gate signal generating circuit 5. Corresponding to the degree of focusing, the gain of the DTL signal is changed relatively inside and outside the gate so that focus inside the gate can be easily controlled.
