PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decide existence of damage on an MD in advance of recording data. SOLUTION: A recording medium 1 is scanned in advance of the recording of data, and based on a scanning result, whether or not the damage is generated in the recording medium 1 is judged. When the damage is generated as a result of decision, a user is informed of the existence of the damage. It is preferable to calculate time for which recording can surely be performed without generating a recording error, etc., from the address of the damage generated on the recording medium 1, and to inform the user of the time with the existence of the damage.
